City of Angels is a musical set in Hollywood in the 40s, exploring the
interaction between a writer of hard-boiled detective novels and his
gumshoe hero. The story revolves around duality between real
characters in the author's life, and characters in his books. Throughout
the course of the show, the lines between the real world and the
fictional world begin to blur, until at the end of the play, we see a
duet between the author and his fictional detective. Cy Coleman contributed an excellent score to match the period, while David Zippel's lyrics easily live up to the book the show was based on. The original book was authored by Larry Gelbart, the man who brought you the TV series "M*A*S*H." |
