Notes from Uncle Roger

"I believe each individual is naturally entitled to do as he pleases with himself and the fruit of his labor so far as it in no wise interferes with any other man's rights." -- Abraham Lincoln

Do it. Do it now. Whatever it is, don't wait until you have the time, or until you retire. Your "golden years" are not a reward for years of service; vacations are not prizes accorded to those who work the hardest. Instead, toil is a means to an end -- don't put off reaching that end if you don't have to. Success is doing what you enjoy, not having the resources to do it without the ability.

Someone recently used my Alphapaging web page to send me this message:

"this is pretty frivolous for someone who lists his time as so precious"
I'm not sure if they were referring to the Alphapaging page itself, or my site in general, but either way they misunderstood me. Building a web page is not a waste of time, if it is something you enjoy, or offers some other benefit. It is a waste of time if you do it because you think you're supposed to, rather than because you want to. Washing your car, making your bed, shining your shoes -- these are good examples of things that may be a waste of time.

There is but one thing that is truly irreplaceable: time. You can never get more time. You can take my money, my possessions, my job and professional reputation, and I can replace or rebuild them all. But if you waste my time it is gone forever. Do not waste my time, or your own. It is the most valuable asset you have.

Confidence in yourself is the key to success. If you don't believe in yourself, you'll never believe that you can succeed, or have succeeded. More than anything, I believe in me. There is nothing I can't do if I put my mind to it, and I'm sure that's true of you as well.

All intelligent beings must be judged solely on the basis of how and to what purpose they use their intellect. Any other possible basis for judgement is not only irrelevant but inappropriate as well.
