Uncle Roger's
Notebooks of Daily Life

Last weekend was the San Francisco Urban Adventure. It went pretty well, all things considered. Cassie was there for most of the weekend. Rachel was sick and missed Saturday. Dad, of course, couldn't make it.

Friday night dinner was good, albeit a little spicy for a large group. After dinner, we were visited by raccoons and skunks, much to Cassie's delight. We also had quite a fire going, using that urban driftwood, pallets.

Dessert was one of the highlights of the evening -- Daniel had gotten a cake decorated to look just like the Urban Adventure dash plaque and logo. The decorator did an excellent job, too. Even though it was a really good cake, we only got through half of it.

Saturday turned out to be a nice day, although because of some silly race, I wasn't sure I'd be able to get back to the campsite in the morning. Thanks, however, to a friendly park service ranger, I did. After breakfast, we headed off for Lombard. As last year, I headed for the bottom to take pictures.

We got everyone down safely, without even having to winch anyone, and made our way through the city to the South Beach Yacht Club. There we got the Barbeque going. After lunch was the trip over to the nearby West Marine store, and a sailboat ride around the harbor.

Last year, Cassie missed the saliboat, but Dad made it. Dad, of course, loved it, and so, naturally, did Cassie. She wasn't scared at all, which is a good thing.

After the yacht club, we did Little Lombard, something new for this year. We broke up for a while thereafter; Daniel had to pick up his kids at the airport and I had to visit Dad. Later, we met back at the campsite for dinner -- Pasta, garlic bread, and salad, with s'mores for dessert. In addition, we had leftover cake and ice cream, and someone brought a huge box of Godiva chocolates.

After dinner, there was plenty of talk around the fire, including telling the group that Dad had told me to tell everyone (without any prompting or anything on my part) to have a great weekend. Daniel and I passed out some of the gifts and prizes we had collected, and thanked the group for making it such a great event.

After things settled down a bit, there was still lots of activity on the part of the local wildlife. Cassie was having a blast spotlighting the racoons and skunks with my flashlight.

While all this was going on, I got a page from Rachel. I called her back and she wanted to know where we were. Turned out it was after 10:30. I had told John and Gemma that Cassie would probably fall asleep around 9:30 or 10:00, and I would put her down in the back seat of Rachel's Intrigue and bring her home. Around 10:30 they had started to wonder where she was.

She was still going strong, despite getting started around 9am, and not taking a nap to speak of. I hadn't realized how late it was, because I had expected Cassie to fall asleep as sort of a human alarm clock. I got her packed up and we headed home.

Sunday, Rachel was feeling well enough to come along, so we headed out again with Cassie in tow. Earlier, Cassie had ridden with Blair Peterson and his kids in their D110, and then later, with Daniel in Kermit. Sunday, she got to ride with Andy Smith, a really nice guy who was there on his own. Cassie definitely lucked out!

After photo shoots above the Golden Gate Bridge and a visit to the Marine Mammal Center, we headed for the beach and lunch. We had some great mediterranean sandwiches and broke up.

All in all, it was a very successful and enjoyable weekend, and we're already looking forward to Urban Adventure III. Next year, we'll have both Dad and a Land Rover with us!
