Readings and Lectures

Joan Kruckewitt: The Death of Ben Linder
Modern Times Bookstore, 888 Valencia St.
On April 28, 1987, Ben Linder and two Nicaraguans were ambushed and killed by the Contras, making Ben the first American killed by Ronald Reagan's freedom fighters. The Death of Ben Linder incorporates formerly classified CIA documents that reveal who killed Linder and why. Linder's story is important -- both as a portrait of an idealist who died for his beliefs and as a case study of a failed foreign policy. It vividly exposes the true dimensions of a war that forever marked the lives of both Nicaraguans and Americans.
