Somewhat sheepishly, I explained that the keyboard was supposed to detach, but I wasn't exactly sure how it went back together. I did manage to get it back together, of course, but I'm sure the guy was relieved when I bought it.
It turns out to be a pretty interesting computer. It appears to be a '286 laptop (bordering on luggable), but not only does it have a full-size, detachable keyboard, but it also has a single, standard ISA expansion slot and uses standard 30-pin SIMM's.
When I realized this, I thought it would make a perfect host computer for my voice-mail system (it uses a half-length, 8-bit ISA card and runs fine under MS-DOS) but as it turns out, the voice-mail system's card has a component that protrudes too far to fit.
Somewhat surprisingly, I have been able to find little information about Altima and their laptops on the web. Please let me know if you have any information about the company or this computer!
